The devices are great, but the app is not. Keep crashing on latest ios. Please fix/make better.
The Spot device is good but this app will not even open on my iPhone. Just keeps crashing and yes, everything is updated on the iPhone and Spot app. As is, app is useless.
Mine worked fine as of yesterday. Today it shuts down a split second after opening. Tried updating my IPhone 13, deleting the app, powering down my phone then reinstalling the app many times, in many different sequences. My only option now is to use the web based page, which is pretty crappy. I’m online now looking for a different company for my needs.
App now crashes immediately upon opening IOS 17.4.1
This would be great if it actually functioned as it should we have multiple assets and the app does not allow for different colors of the assets except on the desk top version. This makes the functionality of the actual tracking nearly impossible to follow as all the assets are the same color.
From the moment I downloaded it never worked.
The batteries that came with my device died in about 10 minutes. App said firmware needed to update but when I plugged the device in it was up to date. Device doesn’t show nor does the history on the app but the location shows on the website. I have yet to figure out how to set text alerts or notifications aside from email. There isn’t an option on the app or the website that I can find and the app doesn’t show up in downloaded apps to turn on notifications.
I would hope the app would let me setup and configure my spot, change check-in messages, etc while I am on the go. It does none of that. It is simply a viewer - so I can see the messages I already know I sent? What’s the point? Am I missing something here? Looks like instead of an app I have to go to the website and work from there.

If this was a free service it would still be terrible. It’s not a free service, the app was supposed to be so my family could easily track me. Obviously that hasn’t worked well. Switched to Garmin and threw my spot in the trash.
I wanted to like this thing but it doesn’t work reliably. I had it in my Jeep and sometimes it would notify me when my Jeep moved sometimes it wouldn’t. Even when it did decide to work it would often be 10-30 minutes after it moved. The app looks like it was developed by elementary kids. Just junk. Spot last updated it a year ago so it’s apparent they are not very invested in it. Lots of better options out there now.
There isn’t much to say… this app simply doesn’t work. In any way. By any metric.
Underwhelming. The UI is very basic and doesn’t have any features you’d expect from a subscription based GPS tracker - like cloud based storage. It appears to store everything locally, so if you lose your phone or it happens to be in the equipment that’s stolen, you have no ability to see movement history. Basically, you start fresh when you download the app. It’s also odd that they have different apps for each Spot device. It seems it would be better to put all the development muscle into one app that works really well and also allows Spot users to deploy different devices from 1 interface. As for the tracking, it does work and that’s why I keep it. Cell providers are starting to offer similar services with cool features, so I’m not sure how long I’ll stay.
The app really is a waste of time. Why wouldn’t they make an option for things like updating device functions like pre programmed messages? I just don’t understand why a company would be happy with something that is a disservice to their products.
Spot really need to pay more attention to their software... nice product but interface is so old
This app gives you a log of messages and mapped locations. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could use it to share your location with loved ones? Well, it doesn’t do that. Basically, it will show your location in app if you have cell service. Again, pointless and poorly conceived. I’ve been a pot user for many years. Subscription costs continue to sky rocket, and they renew your service automatically. I’ve sent a calendar reminder to cancel in 2021 before they hit my card again. I’ll be using a Garmin product next season.
Spot trace, the subscription , and especially this app are such a waste of money. Awful. DO NOT BUY SPOT PRODUCTS
Used forever with a generation one spot. Worked well, although not in landscape on ipad. Updated today and will not work with night mode as they used a white font on white-nite background. The menu item for type of view takes up lots of map space and can’t be removed. Does no one check updates against reality. May be time to drop SPOT instead of renewing in November.
Thanks for finally updating this app! So. Still have to test on ipad but in a small SE this update us almost unusable. The icons for the pins are huge and the selection for the map styles takes up alot of visual real estate. Please fix or allow settings for screen resolution or something. DM me for screen pics.
I have been a customer for many years and this app is still just as bad as when it was in its infancy. It is nearly unusable and very frustrating to navigate. Rates have gone up year after year and now are triple what I signed up for all under the guise of improving their service, yet from a customer facing standpoint the app is still not intuitive to use and has not been updated in years. I can’t imagine with Spot Trace if my vehicle is actually stolen and I have to try and communicate to authorities where my vehicle is traveling using the app while my anxiety is high. I have had the Spot Trace for several years and today we purchased the Spot Gen4 for our backcountry adventures backpacking, trail running, camping, sailing into remote locations, etc because it is the gold standard for a backcountry emergency beacon. I tried using the app for route tracking and it is exactly as bad as the Trace. Please, I beg you, invest in app developers that will make this app more intuitive to navigate since it is the way most of your customers will interface with the product after initial set up is done online. For me personally, I think the customer facing feature that also needs lots of improvement is showing location and route tracking for your contacts. I found that if you add phone AND email for every contact you want to report location to it is a marginally better. The text alerts give coordinates that aren’t linked and many won’t know how to use those to check your location. My 70+ year old mother and father certainly won’t. By also adding the email your contacts will be provided with two location links for the check-in and custom message features. The first link is to Spot’s map that gives a ~2000 mile north to south view that requires an incredibly ridiculous amount of zooming to see where someone is actually located. The second link is Google Maps and gives a more realistic ~11 mile north to south view to show location. From my Seattle location the default view on the first link shows Washington and Montana and Vancouver Island in their entirety, 90% of Oregon and Idaho, most of British Columbia and parts of Wyoming, North and South Dakota. It would take me 16h 48m of nonstop driving to get to Dickinson, ND. Is it useful to go to that level of view as your default? I can’t even achieve that view on a commercial plane at cruising altitude. With the rates that are currently charged annually for service, and based on trends over the last several years I forecast they will go up again next renewal, please invest some of that money into a better app. End rant.

We spend a lot of money for an annual service plan. Why hasn’t this app been updated in 4 years? App is flakey, outdated and practically useless.
We’re in year 2020 with the most advance technology and this APP can’t get an update when I’m getting charge $50 a month in two devices!!!! This is ridiculous! PLEASE UPDATE TO iOS 13 or to new iPhones big screens! Last update was like 5 years ago!
Twice they have change my monthly without notice or approval. I like the service but they are crooks on billing. Increased me 30% without even a simple email.
I’ve had one in my ice house for a few years now. I wired it into the house battery. I know exactly where it is at all times. If someone borrows my house I know where they set it. If someone were to steal it I’d know it right away. Definitely worth it.
It’s 2019. iOS users have had large screen iPhones for years now. Yet this app has not been updated for the max phones, causing everything to look blown out and stretched. This is embarrassing and shows lack of support from SPOT.
Wow, what year did they release this app? Old, and has no features. Pretty lame for a cool device!
Randomly drops track history points and status points off maps even though they are well within the 30 day limit. They may show up later but other points drop. Sometimes multiple track points never show up leaving large gaps in track. A previous reviewer used the term “flaky” which describes the system well. If Spot doesn’t correct this by the time my renewal comes up I will look for something else to meet my needs.
buy spot trace on 8/16/2019, and since I bought it I have a problem because it does not tell me anything, I arrive at several sites and it does not notify me anything, I have an iphone xs max, what can I do, it is not working, I hope you answer me quickly, thank you very much
As far as I can tell is does nothing. No way to make any adjustments in the settings, no way to do anything. Similar to my experience as a whole with this company. Poor customer service, poor electronic interfaces.... would hate for see what happens if I ever actual ended real help.
After purchasing this product and activating it I myself was quite confused as to how it operated. After speaking with tech-support I might add at about 10:30 PM at ... they answered promptly. After about five minutes I have a solid understanding and put the device to use. It did exactly what I needed to do. Real time Continuous tracking, accurate to within a parking space. And when I go off grid the family will know exactly where I’m at at all times. The app itself is perfect One click shows exactly whether the Tracker is located. Another click And you can see the route it took to get there very simple easy and understandable.
The Spot X will NOT work with the app and they have no plans to fix it. Do not waste your money or time and get the Garmin.
This device works great. Just follow the simple setup directions and everything works just fine.

Been using spot sense the beginning never was the brightest candle . But it does work , we use a gen 3 device . smart phones are something else. Keep it simple I guess . I am watching my wife ride her scooter all over two big county’s right now, works for us on both I pad and android.
I don’t understand the purpose of this app, everything has to be done online, so why even provide an app?
The app does not work with the SPOTX. I should have bought a cheaper device then the app would work.

I rarely leave reviews for apps. But for this one I’m making an exception. It’s AWFUL and doesn’t work AT ALL! I even messages them for help. NO RESPONSE! The app does LITERALLY nothing!!! Don’t waste your time!
I don’t understand how an App like this can exist, nor do I understand why Apple allows it’s sale in the app store. This App doesn’t do anything, it doesn’t work. Like at all. Not even a little bit. Spot is a spotty service at best, they definitely chose a good name to represent they’re lack of quality, and unreliability. Cheers! Hope My life never actually depends on one of these things..:(
Just got the new Spot X, tried this app. It does not allow me to filter messages and as a result no data appears. App has not been updated in two years and does not seem to work with their newest product.
We’ve used the Spot for two seasons now and both times it has been a blessing. My husband goes up in the mountains and at times, he’s on his own. It’s nice that I can check in and see that he’s ok, especially since service out there is pretty much non existent. This has definitely been worth the investment and saved me a lot of stress!!
The old style worked much better. Just plain simple garbage. As a long time SPOT enrollee I am extremely disappointed in this updated (Gen 3) version. It is so obviously designed to minimize data and extremely limited GPS acquisition that it is not worth buying.
